The Somone basin is at the heart of a key region for Senegal's economy: the Dakar-Thiès-Mbour triangle. Population growth in the 12 municipalities of the area is sustained and the coastal part, which is very touristic, is highly urbanized, which threatens particularly sensitive coastal ecosystems. The territory is also structured by a strong economic activity, diversified and dispersed. This high concentration of users on a territory generates significant pressures on the water resource that threaten its availability in the short term and are the source of many conflicts of use between the actors of the territory
It is in this context that the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) project in the Somone basin was initiated in January 2019 by the Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE) of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
