The State of Senegal and its partners have made significant investment efforts in the rural hydraulics sector in recent decades. These investments have made it possible to carry out hundreds of highly productive boreholes in the groundnut basin, generally more than 300 m away, the Maestrichtian aquifer, whose water is sometimes brackish and/or contains a high fluorine content. Salt contents exceeding 3g per litre of water are frequently observed.
Nearly a third of the boreholes in the groundnut basin have very high levels of fluoride. Fluoridated water looks good for its consumers when it is not salty because it has no taste but its harmful effects are only seen in the long term. The very serious effects on health, are not limited to a red coloring of the teeth of consumers but beyond 3mg / liter, very painful sketal deformities are observed.
