The ninth World Water Forum scheduled to take place in Dakar in March 2021 will be the opportunity for the States that will be represented to launch a "global initiative" to accelerate universal access to water, its executive secretary, Abdoulaye Sène, announced on Thursday in Fatick (centre).
"We are going to launch a global initiative that will go in the direction of accelerating universal access to water," said Mr. Sene, responding to a question from the governor of Fatick, Seynabou Gueye, on the difficulties of access to water in several municipalities in the region.
Mrs. Guèye received a delegation led by Mr. Sène, who came to provide financial support to the Regional Committee for the Control of Epidemics in Fatick.
"Quick solutions will be found" to the difficulties of access to water in the Fatick region, promised the hydraulic engineer and executive secretary of the ninth World Water Forum.
"As for Fatick, there are water supply problems in Foundiougne, Fimela and other localities," Abdoulaye Sène said.
"We are trying to ensure that people's expectations are met," added Mr. Sène, former president of the Fatick regional council.
Senegal is in the process of developing a "resilience programme" to water shortages, he said, asserting that the country wants to be the first in Africa to achieve the sustainable development objectives (SDOs) relating to water.
"We want the World Water Forum in Dakar to provide answers to the water problems faced by populations," Mr. Sène said.
"The President of the Republic will ensure that exceptional means are mobilized for universal access to water in our country. Water is at the root of everything, the water issue is crucial," he stressed.
The ninth edition of the World Water Forum will be held in Dakar from 22 to 27 March 2021. Exchanges will focus on the theme: "Water Security for Peace and Sustainable Development".
According to the Executive Secretariat headed by Abdoulaye Sène, nearly 10,000 participants, including Heads of State, will take part.
